A Walk in the Woods

A wonderful autumn day for a walk in the woods. I started this walk because there was a lot of commotion going on with the birds. I wondered what all the fuss was about so headed out to see what I could see. I video taped the sound of the birds but it appears that blogger is unable to upload videos, at least not on this website. So unfortunately you get no sound, no annoying bird racket :). It wasn't really annoying, it was actually very interesting though I never found out what all the fuss was about. But here are a few pictures of the trails and where we have our Fright Night. We haunt the trails (well...we try), hang lights and have some props too. There is a bonfire near the tepee which is the final destination. Hot mulled cider, hot cocoa, tea, lots of baked goods and of course candy are all waiting for everyone upon their arrival. Some of the kids wear costumes and some do not. We have a spooky time.
These forest friend pictures are especially for Danielle who wants to go hiking to find snakes, frogs, toads, whatever. We went hiking once and didn't see anything.

Next time I'll have to plant some things along the way to scare her with :-))). I called her to go hiking today but she was not available.
Just before entering the woods I knelt down between some trees to take a picture and just happened to capture a squirel coming down the trail. You can see him right and center of the first picture. I stayed very still and watched. He would stop, then trott along again , stop and trott again, going on his merry way . . . until he saw me, then he made a beeline for the woods. :)
I saw the chipmunk while sitting and enjoying my surroundings so I zoomed in and got these pictures. Once he realized I was there he scurried away into the rock pile but I kept looking for him and that is when he reappeared on top of the boulder. He just stayed there starring at me. He is looking pretty ferocious don't you think? I mean, this is not a friendly face. :) Yikes!

Olde Time Picture

Here we are, me and the girls :).
Something we thought would be a fun thing to do.
I was concerned about the color of my dress and the purple beads they put on Jennifer, but it doesn't matter does it ? :)

CORNFLAKE COOKIES

My mom used to make these delicious cookies all the time. This is a great, healthy snack. Well. . . . .It's not fruit, but it is full of many of the essential vitamins, minerals, fiber and protein needed in a healthy diet. It is so simple even the kids can make them. There are a zillion variations, just use your imagination. I have substituted many things in the past to add antioxidents, fiber, protein, etc., to accommodate the diet of the day or whatever I happen to have on hand at the time.

Cornflake Cookies
1 - 12 oz. pkg. Chocolate chips
2 Tbs. Peanut Butter
3-4 cups cornflakes

Melt chocolate chips and peanut butter, stir in 3 cups cornflakes mixing until coated. If you find you have a lot of extra melted chocolate, add more cereal. I happen to like chunks for chocolate so I use a little less cereal. If you've got lots of kids around, you may want to add more cereal and get more cookies for your crowd. Again, modify it to suit your needs/liking. Line cookie sheets with waxpaper. Spoon onto waxpaper. Make cookies as large or as small as you like. Refrigerate and in about 10 minutes they are ready to eat. This is the basic recipe. you can substitute any crispy flake cereal or any chex cereal. To make it suit your diet, use your favorite high fiber cereal, add nuts, even grapenuts cereal, again, use your imagination. I sprinkled with orange and brown jimmies for a festive finish. Store in an air tight container in refrigerator.
TIP: If you spray your tablespoon with cooking spray, the peanut butter will slide out easily. This is also helpful when measuring honey, molasses, corn syrup or any thick, slow running liquid, to make quick/easy clean up.

Coming Soon

I know I have been slacking here. It has been a busy week.
October brings lots of changes and activities: Halloween Decorating, Birthdays, Anniversaries, Clam Bakes, Fright Night and its planning, and Halloween. There is also getting the garden packed away for winter and intermittent hikes in the woods. It is a very crazy month for our family. Though I realize much of it is of my own doing.
I do have a recipe coming soon, within the next day or two, so stay tuned and be looking for that and more.
For now, embrace and enjoy this brisk, beautiful autumn weather for it won't be long before it is all replaced by old man winter brrrrrr.
