Why do we fast? I wonder how many other religions fast during lent? I once conducted a survey on this topic but failed to save the documentation and unfortunately do not remember the findings. When we receive ashes on Ash Wednesday, the priest or ministers says "Repent and believe in the Good News" as he makes the sign of the cross on our forehead with ashes. This in itself tells us that lent is about repentance and faith. Fasting is a form of prayer. It teaches us self-discipline, self-control (desperately needed in this day and age) and strengthens our faith. Jesus fasted in the desert for 40 days and 40 nights (Matthew 4:1-3; Luke 4:1-2) in preparation for his ministry/spiritual battle with the devil. Lent is a time to take an honest look at our spiritual lives and pray for a change of heart and peace in our souls. So what do we do? Try reflection, reevaluation, sacrifice (fasting), prayer, etc. to assist in spiritual growth during this holy season. Our church is praying this prayer during the Lenten season.
Anima Christi Prayer
Soul of Christ, sanctify me; Body of Christ, save me; Blood of Christ, inebriate me; Water from the side of Christ, wash me; Passion of Christ, strengthen me; O good Jesus, hear me; Within your wounds hide me; Separated from you, let me never be; From the evil one protect me; At the hour of my death, call me; And close to you bid me; That with your saints, I may be, praising you forever and ever. Amen
